British man proves it's never too late to travel
07 January 2008

A British man has shown that it is never too late to realise your ambitions to see the world, by setting sail on a round-the-world trip to New Zealand.

Eric King-Turner, aged 102, became the UK's oldest emigrant last week when he left his native country to start a new life on the other side of the world.

Mr King-Turner and his wife Doris embarked on a sea journey from Southampton on 5 January that is set to take six weeks to reach New Zealand.

The ambitious traveller is set to turn 103 shortly after arriving in his new home.

Mrs King-Turner, originally from New Zealand, has kept a house in Nelson on the south island of New Zealand during the 13 years for which she has been married and living in the UK.

She told the BBC that she expected her husband to settle well following the move.

'He's very easy to get on with and he settles down very quickly, so I think he'll quite enjoy it out there,' she said.
