Fiji island to get new marina
21 January 2008
A multi-million dollar marina is set to be constructed in Fiji in order to boost one of the local tourism industry's most important segments.
Sailing holidays in Fiji are becoming increasingly popular and the new facility, which is being backed by an Australian investor, is set to lend further support to this part of the market.
According to Bill Bennett, the director of Amanuca resort on Tokoriki Island, the South Pacific archipelago has the potential to become one of the world's top yachting destinations, the Fiji Times reports.
Mr Bennett has already constructed a 300-room, four-star resort on the island.
'I have very big plans for Amanuca Island Resort and this includes a yachting facility,' the developer said.
'The deep-water marina that I plan to build on the island would be able to cater for 150 crafts and will also have a bunkering facility.'
However, Mr Bennett also expressed concern over government plans to reduce the amount of time that yacht owners can spend in Fiji from six months to three, which he said could lead to travellers heading to neighbouring countries such as Samoa or New Zealand.
