Singapore sees record visitor numbers in 2007
23 January 2008

Singapore broke previous tourism records last year when it welcomed 10.3m visitors, according to new figures.

This represents a 5.4% increase on 2006 and was the highest number of tourists ever to arrive in Singapore in a single year.

Rising demand for travel to the city state delivered a substantial boost to its economy, with tourism receipts increasing 11.3% from the previous year to reach S$13.8bn (£4.9bn), the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) revealed.

A statement from the STB said: 'Benefiting from the record visitor arrivals, the hotel industry saw both the average room rate and average occupancy rate setting new highs.'

The top five source markets for Singapore last year were Indonesia, China, Australia, India and Malaysia, accounting for more than half of all arrivals.

Singapore is well positioned to set a new tourism record this year, with the first ever Formula One night race being held in the city in September, an event that is expected to attract widespread interest from visitors.
