Funding set to boost Welsh tourism
24 January 2008

The Welsh assembly government has revealed that it is to invest more money in tourism with the aim of boosting visitor numbers and creating new jobs.

A multi-million pound package was unveiled for the Heads of the Valleys area of Wales, which is expected to attract nearly a quarter of a million visitors and develop an industry worth nearly £120m.

An extra £5m will be given to the Heads of the Valleys initiative, which is now in its third year of delivery and worth a total of £140m.

Leighton Andrews, Wales' deputy minister for regeneration, said: 'The Heads of the Valleys area offers a unique combination of outdoor activity and heritage tourism. These investments will support these themes.'

He added: 'Tourism is already an important industry for the region bringing in 2.6m visitors a year while unique attractions like Blaenavon World Heritage Site have the potential to become a major attraction of international significance.'

Projects this year will include the extension of the historic Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway and the creation of a garden based on themes of the environment and climate change.
