International arrivals hit 900m
29 January 2008
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has released statistics revealing that international tourism arrivals reached a level close to 900m in 2007.
This new record figure represented an increase of 52m arrivals, or 6%, compared to 2006.
Of the additional 52m international arrivals, Europe saw an extra 19m visitors and the Asia Pacific region saw an increase of 17m.
According to the UNWTO, the Middle East has been one of the 'tourism success stories' of the decade so far, with a total of 46m international arrivals in 2007.
Visitor numbers grew at a faster rate than the world average in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia and Egypt among the leaders of the growth.
Commenting on the figures, UNWTO secretary general Francesco Frangialli said: 'Economic and tourism growth are driven by emerging markets and developing economies.
'While mature markets remain the leading destinations in the world, the faster growth rate of new markets confirms UNWTO's main message of tourism's potential for the developing world.'
