Set-jetting craze 'boosting travel industry'
31 January 2008

The trend of 'set-jetting' – travelling around the world to visit locations that have appeared in movies – is delivering a significant boost to the tourism industry, it has been claimed.

According to Tom Griffiths, founder of travel community gapyear.com, set-jetting has developed into something of a craze since the turn of the century.

'Set-jetters have been visiting New Zealand because of Lord of the Rings,' he said. 'The first one we saw was The Beach and we still have lots of backpackers going off to Koh Tao to see where The Beach was set.'

He added: 'Madagascar is another one that has benefited.'

Mr Griffiths described New Zealand as a 'solid destination' that is seeing particular growth among travellers aged 55 to 65, many of whom are looking for new experiences.

Another country that could reportedly increase in popularity in the future is South Korea, mainly due to a number of deals being launched by Korean Air.
