Beijing to get second airport
31 January 2008
A second airport is set to be constructed in Beijing, the capital of China, according to reports.
The new hub is scheduled to open in 2015 and will provide relief for the city's Capital International airport when it reaches maximum capacity, People's Daily Online reports.
Rising passenger numbers at Beijing's existing airport have necessitated the opening of a third terminal, which is expected to open for testing at the end of February.
Yang Guoqing, deputy minister of the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC), said that there will be no further developments at Capital International and also dismissed rumours that have emerged over the site of the new airport.
'The location of the second airport has not been decided, because choosing the right location is a very complicated matter,' he said.
The CAAC is reportedly studying a number of international cities that have two or more airports, including New York and Shanghai, to inform its decision on where to base the new hub.
