New rail service to boost Spanish travel
01 February 2008

Visitors to Spain will soon see their travel options within the country boosted by a new high-speed rail link.

The Spanish government unveiled plans for a new train service linking Malaga, the tourist hotspot on the south coast, to Barcelona in the north-east, thinkSpain reports.

Development minister Magdalena Alvarez unveiled the plans, the key to which is the fact that the rail link will not pass through the capital Madrid, which lies in the heart of Spain.

At present, anyone wishing to travel from Malaga to Barcelona by train would have to go through Madrid.

The new connection is expected to make use of a bypass that will join the Barcelona-Madrid line in the north with a Madrid-Malaga link in the south.

While there is no date set for the opening of the new service, it is expected that it could shave up to five hours off the amount of time needed to travel between Barcelona and Malaga by train.

One transport link that is close to being up-and-running is a train service between Malaga and Sevilla, which will open on 20 February and call at Antequera, Puente Genil and Cordoba.
