Laos 'number one destination of 2008'
04 February 2008

The south-east Asian nation of Laos is the number one place to visit in 2008, according to the New York Times.

In its list of 53 places to go this year, the newspaper said that Laos is shaping up to be 'Indochina's next hotspot'.

Exploring the country's appeal, the newspaper states: 'Ancient sites like the Wat Phou temple complex and the capital city of Vientiane are drawing culture seekers.

'Luxury teak houseboats are cruising down the Mekong. And global nomads are heading to Luang Prabang to sample the Laotian tasting menu at 3 Nagas.'

Second in the list was Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, with Tunisia, Mauritius and Miami's mid-Beach making up the top five.

Completing the New York Times' list of the top ten places to visit this year are South Beach, Miami; the Maldives; Death Valley in California and Nevada; Courchevel, France; and Libya.

Middle Eastern destinations such as Iran and Kuwait City also appeared in the top 50, as did UK cities Liverpool and London.
