A third of holidaymakers 'travelling uninsured'
06 February 2008

One in three holidaymakers are taking a risk by going on holiday without insurance, according to research.

Some 35% of the respondents to a Nationwide poll said that they do not always take out travel insurance when they go away, meaning they are vulnerable to the financial consequences of flight cancellations or lost baggage.

More than half of the people in the survey said that they travel more than once a year.

When asked how they keep their passports and money safe while abroad, 36% said they keep them on their person, 12% keep them in a suitcase and 9% simply leave them in a drawer.

Robin Bailey, Nationwide's insurance director, said: 'It is astounding that people are prepared to take such a gamble when travelling abroad.

'You never know what's around the corner and for that reason it is vital that you have adequate travel insurance in place.'

The 25-34 age group appears the most likely to take out travel insurance, with 89% saying that they cover themselves whenever they go on holiday.
