Heathrow trials biometric security
06 February 2008

Trials of biometric security systems have begun at Heathrow in the lead-up to the opening of Terminal Five in March.

Travellers heading to UK destinations through Heathrow are being asked if they want to participate in the trial by providing digital fingerprints and a photograph.

The information recorded at the security area is then checked against passengers at the gate before they board their flights.

This system is being tested as a possible solution that could arise at Terminal Five due to the fact that it will be used by both domestic and international passengers.

'We need a way of being able to ensure that an international passenger doesn't get on a domestic flight by swapping boarding passes with a domestic passenger,' Damon Hunt, a spokesman for airport operator BAA, told Bloomberg.

'This will let us have a single common departure lounge.'

Terminal Five, which will only be used by British Airways, is set to open on March 27th this year and will feature hundreds of shops and restaurants and the world's largest airline lounge complex.
