Shinjuku 'Japan's no 1 tourist spot'
07 February 2008

The downtown area of Shinjuku in Tokyo, Japan, was the country's most popular destination with foreign tourists in 2006-07, according to reports.

Japan's National Tourist Organisation revealed that this was the third year running that Shinjuku was the number one destination among overseas visitors, the Thai News Agency reports.

The group's survey was conducted among 13,891 travellers who visited Japan in the summer and autumn of 2006 and the winter of 2007.

A quarter of the respondents were South Koreans, representing the largest audience, followed by people from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, the US and Britain.

Shinjuku is traditionally a popular location with tourists owing to its well-developed accommodation, shopping facilities and areas such as the Kabukicho entertainment district.

It was followed in the list of popular destinations by Osaka, Kyoto, Ginza and Shibuya.

The attractions that survey respondents spoke highly of included the Beppu hot spring resort in Oita, Mount Aso in Kumamoto and Mount Fuji.
