Airports 'using celebrity announcers'
12 February 2008

Airports in the US are asking celebrity figures to record public announcements in order to increase the likelihood that travellers will listen to the notices.

Famous people with distinctive voices are being used to make specialised messages and inject some fun into the airport experience, USA Today reports.

Nashville international airport in Tennessee is one location where the initiative has been adopted, with country music singer Lee Ann Womack providing a message welcoming visitors to the city.

Emily Richard of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority claimed that record labels and managers are now contacting airports asking if their clients can record announcements.

'They know this is a great way to get their artist's voice and name to millions of visitors,' she said.

This phenomenon is not an entirely new one, however, as Las Vegas' McCarran airport has been using famous figures to make announcements since the early 1970s.

Stars who have lent their vocal talents have included Bill Cosby, Dick Clark and Rodney Dangerfield.

Randall Walker, director of the airport, said: 'The whole concept is to grab people's attention. If people don't pay attention, then it has no effect.'
