13 February 2008
Scenic areas in China saw soaring visitor numbers last weekend as the country celebrated the Spring Festival Golden Week, according to reports.
Official figures showed that many of the main visitor attractions in the north of the country reached or approached their maximum capacities.
In Beijing, locations such as the Forbidden City, Yonghegong Lamasery and the Longqingxia Valley all proved popular, China Daily reports.
Jilin province's Changbai Mountains welcome some 3,800 visitors every day, up 19% from the previous year, while Suzhou and Taihu Lake in Jiangsu province also saw a peak in tourist numbers.
The celebrations of the lunar new year in China also triggered spending sprees in a number of locations.
In Beijing, shoppers spent some 1.9bn yuan (£134m) in the city's many shopping malls and stores.
