Travellers 'set for lower fares, more choice to US'

Holidaymakers can look forward to lower fares and more choice on transatlantic flights to the US, it has been claimed.
According to the Air Transport Users Council (AUC), the open skies agreement between the EU and the US could lead to the aviation market opening up as it did in Europe.
According to James Fremantle, industry affairs manager at the AUC, Europe's open skies arrangement led to more airlines being able to operate throughout the continent, consequently pushing down fares.
'Liberalising the air transport market is good for consumers in bringing prices down and offering more choice,' Mr Fremantle said.
'There are cheaper air fares because there is more competition. It means that you have more choice of subject and airlines that are doing the routes, which ultimately means cheaper fares.'
The increasing choice for customers appears to have already come into effect with British Airways announcing details of its forthcoming business-class only flights from Paris to New York.
'It [more choice] is starting already and I can't think of anything bad that can come of it from a consumer point of view,' Mr Fremantle said.
