Hungary to host central Europe's first rally
22 February 2008

The Hungarian National Tourist Office has announced that the first ever Central Europe Rally will take place in Hungary in April as part of the new Dakar Series.

Taking place between 20 and 26 April, this one-off event will cover some 3,000km between Budapest and Lake Balaton and cross over into parts of Romania.

The race will effectively take the place of the 2008 Dakar Rally, which was cancelled as a result of terrorist threats.

Some 250 competitors, both amateur and professional, are expected to take part in the Hungarian race, including 100 cars, 100 motorbikes and 20 trucks.

In 1978, the route used in the first ever Dakar Rally ran from Paris to Dakar, Senegal and last year the event stretched from Lisbon to the African country.

Next year, motorsport fans will have the chance to follow the event to South America as it takes place in Argentina and Chile between 3 and 18 January.

Flights to Budapest are available from nine airports in the UK, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Liverpool and Glasgow, with carriers such as British Airways and Malev.
