Greece, Spain agree on tourism cooperation
22 February 2008

Greece and Spain have agreed to cooperate with the aim of bringing about mutual benefits to their tourism industries, according to reports.

Greek tourism minister Aris Spiliotopoulos and Spanish deputy minister Amparo Fernandez Gonzalez discussed plans for future collaboration at a meeting in Madrid.

Following the talks, which took place during Fitur, an international tourism fair in the Spanish capital, Mr Spiliotopoulos said that the two countries were not tourism rivals, as the world market believes.

The Greek minister said that the nations would establish a channel of communication as they face challenges such as moving their travel industries away from the one-dimensional 'sun and sea' model, the Athena News Agency reports.

Ms Gonzalez said that the Spanish and Greek tourism industries share a lot of common factors.

Travel between Spain and Greece has become increasingly popular in recent years, with some 200,000 Spanish citizens visiting the country in 2006, 33% more than the previous year.

Early estimates suggest that this figure could have increased by a further 15% to 20% in 2007.
