Johannesburg joins Year of the Frog
26 February 2008
People who visit Johannesburg Zoo this year will be doing their bit to help preserve frog species across the world.
The South African city's council announced that the zoo had agreed to join the Year of the Frog campaign.
Amphibians all over the world are reportedly facing a crisis that could lead to their numbers dwindling rapidly if no action is taken.
Johannesburg Zoo will be hosting a number of events, presentations and workshops this year to heighten awareness of the issue and gather support.
First up on the programme is Leap Day, on 29 February this year, when a bandstand will be set up at the zoo to inform people of the problems facing frog species.
Sandra Hlungwani, the reserve's public relations and marketing officer, said: 'The Johannesburg Zoo has [joined] a global campaign to save frogs. It is important to seize this opportunity to get people leaping with the frogs at the zoo.'
Commenting on the particular events, she added: 'Kids will test their mental and physical skills to learn about amphibians around the world and what the zoo is doing to help preserve them.'
