Three Gorges Dam expected to be a hit
12 March 2008
A giant hydroelectric dam, which already attracts more than 1m visitors a year, is expected to welcome even more tourists now construction work on the site is nearly complete.
Located on China's Yangtze River, the Three Gorges Dam saw 1.25m visitors in 2007 and developers say they expect a similar number of tourists to head into the area this year.
'The dam area will have a tourist boom this year thanks to the Olympic Games in August and the basic completion of the Three Gorges project by the end of the year,' Chen Mengjiong, manager of the Three Gorges development, told Xinhua news agency.
The dam is currently the largest industrial tourist site in the whole of China and stands at 2,309 metres long and 185 metres high.
By 2011, developers hope that the dam will generate 22,500 megawatts of energy - which will make it the planet's largest hydroelectric power station.
