US tourism achieves all-time record in 2007
12 March 2008
The United States government announced that the country achieved an all-time record for international tourism last year.
Commerce secretary Carlos M Gutierrez announced that more than 56m international visitors spent $122bn (£60.3bn) in the US in 2007.
The number of people visiting the country last year was 11% higher than in 2006 and broke the previous record of 51.2m tourists in 2000.
Mr Gutierrez said: 'This is yet another record-breaking year for the US travel and tourism industry and another year in which it produced a healthy trade surplus.'
Canada and Mexico were by far the biggest source markets for the American tourism industry, with more than 17.7m and 15m visitors respectively coming from these countries.
The UK (4.49m) was next in the list, followed by Japan (3.5m), with Germany (1.5m) making up the top five.
America's tourism industry now employs 8.5m people, more than the country's construction, business and financial, agriculture and education sectors.
