Don't mess with sharks, travellers warned
17 March 2008
More than 1,500 visitors to the Destinations Holiday and Travel Show this year offered their best tips for people considering an ambitious trip, which included such sage advice as: 'Never mess with a shark.'
Another pointer received by a panel including representatives from the Destinations show and Rough Guides warned of the dangers of wrestling bears.
Less obvious recommendations included emailing passport details to yourself, sharing belongings between suitcases, splitting up money and carrying fake purses or wallets.
The winning piece of advice came from Paul Allen of London, who said that travellers should try something new on every day of their trip, despite their mood, to ensure that their holiday is unique and unforgettable.
Runners-up places were awarded to visitors who gave the hints of relieving a mosquito bite by rubbing it with the inside of a banana skin and getting off one stop early or late on public transport, to offer the chance to discover some new sights and locations.
Louise Maher of Rough Guides said: 'From great practical tips to the completely insane, every entry was worth reading but the winning tip summed it all up for us, if you try something new, you can't go wrong on your travels.'
