BA marks beginning of 'A380 era'
17 March 2008
British Airways has announced that it is preparing for the beginning of the A380 era, with the first Airbus superjumbo set to fly into a UK airport on passenger service for the first time tomorrow (18 March).
Engineers with the airline will handle the maintenance of a Singapore Airlines A380 at London Heathrow as part of BA's preparations to receive its own fleet of 12 superjumbos from April 2012.
Captain Jim Harlow, who has flown with BA for 11 years, has become the first UK airline pilot to qualify to operate the A380.
Captain Harlow described the plane as 'remarkable' and 'incredibly light and responsive to fly', despite its size.
Robert Boyle, British Airways' commercial director, said: 'Just as Terminal 5 enables us to improve the customer experience on the ground, the A380 will give us the opportunity to raise standards in all cabins.
'We see the A380 as a catalyst for change and our goal will be to offer the very best of onboard hospitality and overall journey experience.'
BA will be the first UK airline to use the new Airbus and by 2014 approximately 200 of its pilots will be allocated to the A380 fleet.
