Frankfurt airport opens new terminal section
18 March 2008
People flying into Frankfurt, Germany will soon be able to enjoy a new and smoother experience following the opening of a new terminal section.
Following a 20-month construction period, a new terminal area is set to become operational at the start of the airport's summer timetable this year.
Fraport, the company that operates Frankfurt, invested some 330m (£259m) in the developments.
The changes include a 25,000 square metre expansion to one of the facility's halls and a 320-metre connecting corridor to a new pier.
One of the key elements of the new terminal section provides two docking positions for the A380 superjumbo.
Check-in is set to be made easier at Frankfurt as one hall area was expanded to provide space for 40 more counters, which will create capacity for an extra 4m passengers per year.
In addition to providing a substantial increase in capacity, this development also represents a 'distinctive architectural highlight', according to Fraport.
Frankfurt is the main base of Lufthansa, the national airline of Germany, which carried some 62.9m passengers in 2007.
