New Abu Dhabi terminal to open this summer
26 March 2008

The new Terminal 3 at Abu Dhabi airport in the United Arab Emirates will open this summer and will come at a cost of 1bn dirhams (£135.9m), it has been revealed.

Khalifa Al Mazroui, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac), revealed the development's budget at an industry conference recently, Gulf News reports.

Work on the terminal has been ongoing for the past 18 months and the facility will be opened in phases from the end of April.

Andrew Jones, a spokesman for Adac, said: 'It's being built to accommodate the growth of Etihad Airways.

'When complete, the terminal will have a capacity to handle up to five million passengers a year.'

The new terminal is part of a redevelopment of Abu Dhabi airport that will include a second, 4,000-metre long runway, a new air traffic control tower and expanded cargo facilities.

By 2016, the hub could have the capacity to welcome 40m passengers a year.
