Hawaiian carrier stops operating
01 April 2008

Aloha Airlines has shut down its passenger flight operations as a result of high competition and being unable to secure its long-term financial future.

The Hawaiian airline undertook its last day of business yesterday (31 March) and said it will endeavour to help place customers on flights with codeshare partner United Airlines, as well as a number of other carriers.

Passengers can alternatively request a refund from the relevant travel agent or credit card company. The company's air cargo and aviation services units will continue to function as normal.

David Banmiller, president and chief executive officer of Aloha Airlines, said the closure represented 'an incredibly dark day for Hawaii'.

'Unfortunately, unfair competition has succeeded in driving us out of business, bringing to an end a 61-year-old company with a proud legacy of serving millions of travellers in the true spirit of Aloha,' he added.

Founded in 1946, the carrier operated a range of inter-island and transpacific flights from its base in Honolulu.

Meanwhile, US charter carrier Champion Air also recently announced plans to cease its operations from 31 May, due to financial issues.
