Alitalia bid at risk from unions
01 April 2008

Air France-KLM's takeover bid for troubled Italian carrier Alitalia has been put at risk following temporarily suspended talks between unions and the French airline.

The meeting on 31 March between Air France-KLM's management and the heads of the unions to which Alitalia's employee belong briefly broke down after UIL transport union head Giuseppe Caronia left the negotiating table, the AFP reports.

Alitalia said in a statement that the deadline for an agreement regarding the proposed takeover has now been pushed back to tomorrow (2 April), with talks resuming that day.

Last week, Air France-KLM Chairman Jean-Cyril Spinetta said 'no worker will be abandoned and that an appropriate solution would be designed for each of the 2,100 employees concerned by the plan' should the acquisition go ahead.

The Italian government owns 49.9% of Alitalia. The airline has said it needs a minimum investment of £592m in the near future in order to be able to continue its operations, Reuters reports.
