Tibet to reopen to tourists
03 April 2008

Tibet is to reopen to tourists following clashes between Tibetan protesters and Chinese authorities.

Xinhua, China's state news agency, announced that visitors from home and abroad would be permitted to enter Tibet from 1 May.

Tibet's bureau of tourism announced that travel agencies would be allowed to arrange tours and independent travellers would also be able to visit the region.

Riots in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, escalated on 14 March as monks and other demonstrators protested against Chinese rule of the region.

The regional government suspended tourist permits on 16 March and the tourism office recommended that Chinese travel companies postpone tour plans.

Zhang Qingli of the Communist Party of China said it was important for social order to be restored in Tibet in time to welcome visitors during the International Labour Day holiday in May.
