Morocco expects continued tourism growth
04 April 2008
More people are expected to visit Morocco this year after the country experienced a record year for tourism in 2007, according to reports.
A Moroccan government minister said the country's tourism industry would quicken its pace of growth in 2008, dismissing fears that concerns over terrorism could discourage people from visiting the north African nation.
In 2007, Morocco welcomed some 7.4m visitors, Reuters reports, and this is expected to climb to around 10m this year.
A large portion of the market comes from the UK, France, Spain and Italy, with many people visiting the country's seaside resorts and old towns.
Tourism minister Mohammed Boussaid claimed that these elements would continue to attract visitors this year, commenting: 'Tourism in Morocco is very healthy. There is no slowdown.'
The travel industry accounts for 8% of Morocco's gross domestic product and revenue stood at 59bn dirhams (£4bn).
