AITO: Too many people ignore insurance
10 April 2008
The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) has stressed the importance of having travel insurance and described it as 'amazing' that so many people ignore this aspect of holidays.
Ian Bradley of the AITO made his comments following the opening of Terminal 5 at Heathrow, which saw tens of thousands of bags not returned to their owners following technical problems.
Mr Bradley said: 'It does make sense to have travel insurance. It's always recommended but it's amazing how many people don't want to take it out and think, 'I don't need that'.'
He added: 'You'd be extremely foolhardy not to travel with insurance, especially when bags are going astray. It makes sense, for not a huge amount of money, to get peace of mind.'
The AITO spokesman had some advice for people who are concerned about losing their baggage, such as spreading important items between different bags and clearly labelling luggage, making it more likely that it will be returned.
British Airways operated a full schedule of flights from Terminal 5 for the first time on 8 April, following an opening that was dogged by technical hitches, staff problems and bad weather.
