Package travellers 'rarely venture out of resort'
10 April 2008

British package holiday customers are more interested in staying in their hotel complex and relaxing by the pool than exploring their destination, according to research.

A study by Halifax found that one in ten Britons go on a package holiday to an exotic destination every year but spend an average of just seven hours outside their hotel complex.

This means that 42% of these travellers never speak to any local people and three quarters do not attempt to speak the native language.

Paul Birkhead of Halifax said: 'Our research strongly suggests that the idea of a holiday, to most, is a room with pool and somewhere to eat.

'Package holidays such as all-inclusive [trips] allow Brits to arrive and stay put for the duration and it certainly makes financial sense to make the most of the facilities as this is what you are paying for.'

Egypt was found to be the most popular exotic location for package holiday customers and people living in the Midlands are reportedly the biggest fans of all-inclusive trips.
