Burj Dubai world's tallest man-made structure
11 April 2008
The Burj Dubai tower has been officially declared the world's tallest man-made structure.
It achieved the position this week when it reached a height of 629 metres, higher than the KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota, USA, which stands at 628.8 metres.
The structure, which is currently under construction, has been the world's tallest building for some time, overshadowing the CN Tower (553 metres) in Toronto, Canada and the Taipei 101 (508 metres) in Taiwan.
Ali Alabbar, chairman of developer Emaar Properties, said the tower has placed the city of Dubai in the 'global spotlight' once again.
He added: 'With over 160 storeys now, the most number of liveable floors in any building in the world, Burj Dubai is already pushing the frontiers in architecture, construction and engineering excellence.'
Burj Dubai, which is scheduled to be completed in September 2009, is the centrepiece of Emaar's Downtown Dubai development, which will include retail space and hospitality elements, providing another point of interest for visitors to Dubai.
