American Airlines 'back on track'
14 April 2008

American Airlines resumed flight operations yesterday after five days of cancellations due to prolonged inspections by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The carrier said that in excess of 3,000 flights had to be cancelled affecting 250,000 passengers.

Around 460 flights were cancelled on Tuesday, 1,094 on Wednesday, over 930 on Thursday, 595 on Friday and 200 on Saturday.

American Airlines chief executive Gerard Arpy placed the cost of this disruption in tens of millions of dollars.

'We still have a lot of work to do to get our airline back on track,' Mr Arpey said in a statement to employees on Friday.

'There is no sugarcoating the fact that we are going to have to earn back the trust of the customers we disappointed in recent days.'

FAA officials had ordered American Airlines to check all the wiring on its fleet of MD-80 aircraft.

The administration had reportedly been under pressure from US congress to distance itself from a perceived close relationship with the airline operators.
