'World's biggest airline' could be created
15 April 2008

The biggest global airline could be formed if two international air carriers decide to merge.

Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines are organising a possible merger depending on the acceptance of the move by the US government and shareholders.

If the airlines get the go-ahead they would bring in £17.5 billion revenue and would be supported by 75,000 staff members.

However, job losses of up to 2,000 have been estimated by Delta if the airlines merged.

Jobs are likely to be cut in the administrative and corporate areas as the newly formed company preventing overlapping of job roles.

This has led to opposition from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union because of the impact of the changes on staff.

The newly formed airline would take the name of Delta and be headed by the present chief executive of Delta Air Lines, Richard Anderson.

Both Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Line's financial affairs were recently scrutinised by the US government due to bankruptcy.
