Switzerland prepares to host largest beer festival
17 April 2008

Switzerland will be hoping to prove that it can rival its neighbour Germany for beer festivals when it hosts its own celebration of all things alcoholic next month.

Lausanne will be the location for the country's largest beer festival, which this year will be held on 16 and 17 May.

Visitors to the event are plied with more than 170 different varieties of beer, while entertainment is provided in the form of live music every night in the town's Place de la Navigation.

Lausanne occupies an enviable location in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva, facing the French region of Evian-les-Bains and with the Jura mountains to the north.

The city is of interest to a wider audience than just beer drinkers, as it is located at the limit of the wine-growing regions of Lavaux and La Cote.

In addition to its beer festival, the Lausanne cultural calendar boasts events including an underground film and music festival and a celebration of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
