Record-breaking Singapore Flyer unveiled
18 April 2008

The Singapore Flyer, the largest observation wheel in the world, has been unveiled this week.

Standing at around 165 metres in height, the Singapore Flyer takes over a world record that was once held by the London Eye, which is 135 metres high, and most recently belonged to China's Star of Nanchang (160 metres).

The new observation wheel can carry up to 784 people in 28 capsules and a 30-minute ride will cost just over £10.

Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong attended the official opening of the Singapore Flyer and took a ride on the new attraction, Today Online reports.

He commented: 'We have a very beautiful city and this is a remarkable view of the city.'

The prime minister also predicted a bright future for the observation wheel, saying that its operators are optimistic that it will become 'one of the busiest flyers in the world'.

Singapore is set to be the location of another milestone later this year when it hosts the first ever Formula One night race, which is due to take place on 28 September.
