Prestwick airport boss maintains Elvis claim
23 April 2008
The boss of Glasgow Prestwick airport has maintained his assertion that the Scottish city was the only place in the UK ever visited by Elvis Presley, despite claims to the contrary from a theatre producer.
Speaking to BBC Radio 2, Bill Kenwright said that the legendary rocker came to London in 1958 to visit teen idol Tommy Steele.
The pair enjoyed a short friendship and Steele gave the American star a tour of the sights of the capital, according to Mr Kenwright.
Its association with Elvis is one of Prestwick's claims to fame and the airport's chief executive was keen to stress that, barring photographic evidence of the singer's visit to London, the unique link will remain intact.
'As far as we are concerned, until it is proved otherwise Prestwick airport remains the only place in the United Kingdom that Elvis Presley ever set foot,' Mark Rodwell said.
'There is photographic evidence to prove that Elvis was here on 3 March 1960, however we are not aware of any photographs of this alleged visit to London, while the timing of it also seems a bit vague.'
If Mr Kenwright's claims prove to be true, Prestwick airport may have to remove a star-shaped plaque that proudly claims that it is the only place in the UK that Elvis ever visited.
