Iata renews call for single European sky
23 April 2008
The International Air Transport Association (Iata) has renewed its calls for the unification of European airspace and said that a single European sky could play an important part in tackling climate change.
Giovanni Bisignani, the association's director general, made his comments following a ceremony in Geneva that saw industry leaders sign a historic commitment to the environment.
Mr Bisignani described the declaration as 'a great step' and said that it will drive the industry towards its target of a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency.
He also called on governments to do their part for the environment and support initiatives such as the single European sky.
'They [governments] must invest more effectively in environmental technologies - from alternative fuels to radical dynamics,' Mr Bisignani said.
'And they need to match our efforts at efficiency - such as implementing next generation traffic management systems globally. A single European sky could save 12m tonnes of CO2 at a stroke.'
