VisitBritain: Open coastal paths to boost tourism
24 April 2008
National tourism agency VisitBritain has backed government plans to open up more coastal paths around the UK, saying that the initiative will bolster the appeal of holidays to a number of locations.
Earlier this month, the government published the draft Marine Bill, which includes proposals to improve access to the English coast.
The legislation amendments in the Bill could lead to a coastal pathway covering almost the entire length of the English coast as well as access to beaches, cliffs, rocks and dunes.
VisitBritain spokesperson Sian Brenchley said that the initiative could prove particularly relevant for the modern market, commenting: 'Rather than the traditional two-week holiday away, Brits are now taking weekend breaks spread out throughout the year.
'Opening up coastal paths will be a great way to encourage people to have a rural coastal holiday, to get out and about and enjoy Britain's coast and countryside.'
Ms Brenchley said that British seaside resorts have undergone substantial regeneration in recent years and are becoming 'viable holiday options'.
She also explained that the 'open-air experience' is one of the main reasons that international travellers visit Britain.
