European holidays 'still cheaper than long-haul'
28 April 2008
Holidays to European destinations will be cheaper for Brits than long-haul trips for at least one more year, despite the weakness of the pound against the euro, it has been claimed.
Kayte Williams of Travelsupermarket.com explained that the price of holidays is calculated a year in advance, meaning that the cost of trips to Europe should not yet reflect the exchange rate.
Next year, however, could present a different situation to holidaymakers.
'For this year the cost of European destinations is still relatively cheap or cheaper than long-haul,' Ms Williams said.
'But we will possibly see the increase next year if they [holidays] are being costed at today's rates.'
Despite this fact, the Travelsupermarket.com spokeswoman said that public awareness of the strength of the euro is likely to have an effect on holiday decisions as British travellers are conscious of the fact that their budget will not stretch as far it has before.
'We are currently aware that with the euro we're getting slightly less for our money nowadays and I think that's going to be in consideration when we're planning a holiday,' she said.
