Queensland to boast goat museum
07 May 2008
An outback town in the Australian state of Queensland is set to offer a new attraction to its visitors next year a museum dedicated entirely to goats.
It is thought that the museum, which will also include a goat-racing hall of fame, will be a world first, ABC News reports.
A committee has been put together to lobby for funding from the government and sponsorship for the museum, with the aim of opening the new attraction next year.
Spokesman John de Groot said that, as far as the committee is aware, the museum will be the first establishment of its kind in the world.
He added: 'I'm almost certain as well that there's no goat racing hall of fame anywhere out there in the universe except for what's proposed at Barcaldine.
'It's an acknowledgement of a wonderful animal that's just been so important to so many people for such a long time.'
Barcaldine recently celebrated its love of the goat by hosting a goat-race meeting as part of the Tree of Knowledge festival. The organisers of the race said they hope to make the town the 'goat-racing capital of Australia'.
