Australian lodge celebrates 10th anniversary
08 May 2008
The Thala Beach Lodge in Australia is celebrating its tenth anniversary by giving away free nights in some of its rooms.
Located in northern Queensland between Cairns and Port Douglas, the Thala lodge is a five-star eco resort providing accommodation for people visiting the Great Barrier Reef.
The 145-acre peninsula on which the lodge is based was once home to only 45 acres of forest, with the rest covered by an unsustainable sugar cane plantation.
Rob and Oonagh Prettejohn purchased the land and oversaw the reestablishment of forests, which facilitated the return of bird, lizard and native wallaby populations, as well as a range of other wildlife.
Mr Prettejohn said: 'When we built Thala we knew it was a special place - with a thriving population of wildlife and a unique location between World Heritage tropical rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.
'We're very proud of what Thala stands for in an environmentally conscious modern world and we like to share Thala's experience and philosophy with our guests.'
Thala is accredited by Australia's Eco Certification programme, in recognition of the care it has shown to surrounding habitats, forests and beaches, as well as initiatives including water conservation, recycling and construction from local materials.
