Barcelona 'Spain's most visited city in 07'
08 May 2008

The Catalonian capital of Barcelona was the most visited city in Spain last year, according to government figures.

Statistics compiled for the Frontier Tourist Movement survey showed that some 59.2m people visited Spain last year, compared to 58.2m in 2006.

The Spanish tourism ministry revealed that Catalonia, the autonomous community in the north-east of the country, was the most visited area, with a total of 15.2m tourists.

Most of this audience will have visited Barcelona, to see sights such as the Sagrada Familia, which attracts more than 2m visitors every year.

The Sagrada Familia is a Roman Catholic church that was designed by the architect Antoni Gaudi. Work on the building began in 1882 and continues to this day.

Gaudi's Modernisme mode of architecture is visible all over Barcelona, with tourist attractions such as Park Guell, Casa Vicens, Casa Calvet and Casa Batllo all bearing the hallmarks of the distinctive style.
