LaGuardia passengers given recharge points
08 May 2008

People travelling through New York's LaGuardia airport can now make use of stations allowing them to recharge devices such as mp3 players and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

The 12 'power poles' are located beyond the security checkpoints in the central terminal building and are equipped with four outlets each that customers can use at no cost.

This initiative was first used at John F Kennedy international airport in 2006 following demands made in customer satisfaction surveys.

William R DeCota, the New York Port Authority's director of aviation, said: 'As the use of cell phones, PDAs, laptops and other electronics has proliferated, so too has the need to keep all those batteries charged.

'The power poles at JFK have proved tremendously popular with travellers, and we're happy to expand the program so that our LaGuardia customers – and soon many other travellers – can take advantage of this as well.'

The Port Authority, which also controls New York and New Jersey's bridges, tunnels, bus terminals and seaports, plans to expand the power pole initiative to other sites including Newark Liberty airport in the future.
