South African official welcomes tourism impact

An official from one of the provincial governments of South Africa has welcomed the effect of the country's ever-increasing tourism levels.
Weziwe Thusi, the member of the council of KwaZulu-Natal in charge of culture and tourism, said the travel industry is helping South Africa on a national and provincial level, BuaNews reports.
"Over the years, the industry has proven to be one of the most important economic drivers in our country," she said.
"In our province particularly, some tremendous growth has been achieved, but we still have some way to go to realise our true potential as a tourism destination."
Tourism is becoming increasingly important to South Africa and currently contributes about 8.2% of the country's gross domestic product.
The largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal is Durban, one of South Africa's most popular tourist destinations, which is famous for its beaches.
