Welsh golf development gets green light
13 May 2008
A new luxury resort development has been given the go-ahead in Wales, according to reports.
The £7m project will be based at Fairwood Park golf course near Upper Killay in Swansea, the South Wales Evening Post reports.
Fairwood Park's existing clubhouse will be demolished and replaced with a complex including a luxury hotel and a health centre.
The project is part of south Wales' preparations for hosting the Ryder Cup in 2010.
Erol Golbas, general manager of the park, said: 'The decision will give golf tourism in Swansea a massive boost and will really help us to capitalise on the global coverage that Welsh golf will receive in two years' time.'
A local council spokesman outlined the importance of the development, saying: 'Golf, quality accommodation and leisure facilities are key components of the [region's] tourism strategy.'
Fairwood Park is currently the only 18-hole course in Swansea that has 'championship' status.
