Detroit looks forward to summer of auto-tourism
13 May 2008
The US city of Detroit is expecting the summer of 2008 to be a fruitful one for the auto-tourism sector.
Detroit is inextricably linked with the automotive industry, as it is home to the headquarters of General Motors (GM), Ford and Chrysler, and is regularly referred to by its nickname Motor City.
This image will be boosted this summer when it hosts Year of the Car, a summer festival that will coincide with the 100th year of the Ford Model T, the centennial of GM and the first 'Autopalooza' event in August.
Among the celebrations of these occasions will be an anniversary parade on 18 July that will feature GM vehicles for every year from 1908 to 2008, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Autopalooza will comprise five events during the month of August, including a car show in Rochester Hills on the first three days of the month.
Gary Familian, executive director of MotorCities National Heritage, said: 'Auto-tourism, we believe, represents a major opportunity to generate millions of dollars of revenue for our state.'
