Gone With the Wind 'to boost Georgia tourism'
13 May 2008
The new London stage version of Gone With the Wind is expected to offer a boost to tourism in the US state of Georgia, according to reports.
Gone With the Wind is set in Georgia and, despite the bad reviews it has received, the theatre version of the story has reportedly fostered an interest in the destination among its audience.
Visitors from Britain are already the biggest international element of Georgia's lucrative tourism industry, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Kevin Langston, the state's assistant commissioner for tourism, said: "We're finding that a lot more travel operators in the UK are interested in offering tours that stop in Georgia."
Mr Langston was part of a delegation from Georgia that landed in London this week with the aim of marketing their destination to potential visitors.
A London-based travel agent said that it is not only Gone With the Wind that is boosting interest in Georgia, as people are becoming 'more and more interested in the music, the history and the scenery in the south'.
