Hello Kitty becomes tourism ambassador of Japan

The Japanese character Hello Kitty has been named as the country's new tourism ambassador.
Hello Kitty, a fictional character that has turned into a brand loved by millions of children and young adults, will represent Japan in China and Hong Kong.
It is hoped that the name and face of Hello Kitty will attract the attention of potential visitors in Hong Kong and China, where the character is hugely popular.
Japan has set a goal of attracting 10m visitors from its two target destinations every year under its new 'Visit Japan' campaign.
A lifesize Hello Kitty character dressed in a kimono received an official certification of her role as Japan's tourism ambassador from tourism minister Tetsuzo Fuyushiba today (19 May).
Shintaro Tsuji, president of Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty, said it was "an honour" the character had been chosen to represent Japan.
Last year, Japan welcomed some 8.35m visitors, 60% more than in 2003.
