The African holiday hot-spot of Kenya is back on track after the recent election troubles in the capital, according to Virgin Atlantic boss Sir Richard Branson.

'Tourism in Kenya is the number one industry for the nation and visiting now will make a huge difference to the locals who rely on the industry for a living,' the business tycoon said in Nairobi.

Speaking at the launch of a new advertising campaign aimed at getting more travellers back to Kenya, Sir Richard claimed that over 2m tourists visited the country, famed for its wildlife parks and safari trips, in 2007.

'The post election troubles, which were predominantly focused on the non-tourist areas, have now subsided,' he added.

Long-haul travellers using Virgin Atlantic have risen by 4% in the last month since the opening of its new Terminal 3 home at Heathrow, and its Upper Class sales saw a 10% increase in passenger numbers in the last month.
