Champions League 'boosting demand for rubles'
19 May 2008

Demand for the Russian ruble has rocketed ahead of the Champions League final, according to currency exchange service Travelex.

The final, between Manchester United and Chelsea, will be held in Moscow's Luzhniki stadium on 21 May.

Anthony Hudson, director of retail at Travelex, said that while demand for the Russian currency has steadily increased over the past few days, overall it has tripled.

Mr Hudson said that this is evidence of just how many English fans are planning to make the trip to Moscow to see the game.

He added: 'Whilst big sporting events abroad usually see a spike in demand for the local foreign currency we've seen travellers making larger transactions.

'This may suggest that travellers are combining the event with a few days of holiday either side.'

Current rates place the pound at a value of between 42.4 and 43.9 rubles.

According to Travelex guidelines, a pint of beer in Moscow costs the equivalent of between £1.36 and £2.27, while a meal for two in a restaurant will set you back between £25 and £38.60.
